Wheaton/Herman-Norcross Uses Strong Second to Knock Off MACA

Despite a tightly contested first half, the Wheaton/Herman-Norcross Warriors turned the heat up on the Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta Tigers en route to a 66-43 victory.

In the first half, the game felt uncharacteristicly slow compared to most WHN games. The Tigers did a fantastic job of breaking the Warriors’ press with ease and then taking large chunks of time off the clock with efficient half court ball movement on the perimeter. Nonetheless, the Warriors half court defense still was able to deny MACA any efficient shots. On offense, the Warriors went to Briona Edwards on the block, and she delivered, putting up double digit points in the first. Forward Hannah Gail helped space the floor, burying 3 of her first 4 three balls. Madisyn Braaten played a great two way game in the first for WHN, and was able to carry it into the second. For MACA, Corey Hickman and Ashley Solvie led the offense with 8 and 7 points respectively. The Warriors led going into the locker room with a 29-23 lead, as the clock-killing Tigers limited the 52%-75%-100% shooting start by WHN to just a few possessions.

At the start of the second half, the Warriors were finally able to get back to their usual quick pace, as Emma Schmidt, Scout Cronen, and the rest of the WHN backcourt did a much better job of attacking the youthful MACA guards, generating plenty of transition opportunities. Schmidt, Cronen, and Rinke also combined to shut Hickman down in the second, as the senior Tigers guard didn’t add any points to her first half total. The Warriors jumped out to and held a big 17-21 point lead throughout most of the second. Malory Anderson and Maddie Carrington each had solid second halves for the Tigers, combining for 13 points in the game.
